I’ve had 4 flats on this trip so far. Every time I have one, I wonder why–especially when the 4th one happened, because at that point I had 3 flats in 2 days. I put new tires on the bike before the trip started, so my hypothesis was that I needed bigger tubes to match the new tires.

To find out what was going on, I went to Bayview Bicycles in Langley, Washington, a nice shop run by Michael Copenhaver. I met Michael a year ago when he invited me to do a book reading at his shop last summer. It was good to see him again, and it was great that he started working on the bike as soon as I walked in the door. He did a basic tune-up, and he put new rim tape and tubes on the tires; hopefully, I’ll be good to go.

I love my touring bike. It’s nice when someone who knows what they’re doing gives it some TLC.

Michael works on the Salsa.
Nice to see some bike books on display–including mine!
