One of my favorite films is My Neighbor Totoro. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s about a couple of sisters who have to move to a new home that is near a forest. In the forest is a tree spirit, Totoro, who ends up befriending them. I won’t give away the plot, safe to say that it’s a heartwarming film that speaks to the nature of childhood.
The lot behind our house has a large maple tree. Watching it from season to season helps the transitions take shape during the year. Kait, my favorite daughter, knows I’m fond of the tree, so for Christmas she wrote me a poem and embroidered it in cloth.
